The Hughes Mining Barge

The Hughes Mining Barge was the second vessel used in Project Jennifer. Part barge, part submarine, the HMB was equipped with a retractable roof and was also capable of submerging allowing the Glomar Explorer to position its self over the barge to retrieve the claw and transfer any sections of K-129 it recovered.

The Glomar was capable of grasping the HMB  using retractable "docking legs". It was claimed that the elaborate and expensive HMB allowed for the transfer of large weights without interference from surface currents. It has been suggested that a cheaper method of transfer could have been used, however the submergible HMB also allowed for the transfer of cargo in secret.

The photo below shows the HMB docked at the Lockheed Marine Divisions facility in Redwood City, California. The building next to the barge was rumored to hold a mockup of the K-129 for training. However other rumors claim that the recovered K-129 was actually stored in this facility.
