The Early Years

For the young naval cadet and the college student/dancer, it was love at first site. Irina married Alexander after finishing college and followed hime from assignment to assignment, or in her words, "like a thread follows a needle."

"Everyone lived wherever they could. We all rented apartments and cooked our own meals on charcoal. We lived close to the department headquarters. We got our first apartment in Vladivostock in 1965. One room in a nice building, with all the comforts."

Soon after marrying, they had a son, Sasha. As was their custom, Irina would stay with her mother in Vladivostok while Alexander was on patrol. She worked to earn extra money, and to help pass the time. She was attending an office party, celebrating the International Day of the Woman, when a sudden and overwhelming sense of dread overcame her. These are her words:

"I know exactly the day and hour they died. We celebrated International Woman's Day at work. I was there with my son and we were having a good time. All of the sudden I went into hysterics. I broke down, went crazy. I didn't know what was happening. I just knew that at that moment, something terrible happend. I quit work and flew to Kamchatka, where I heard the rumors. My friends didn't leave my side day or night."

On the same day, the same hour, the same moment Alexander died, he reached out to his wife, 3,000 miles away, one last time.
