Alexander and Irina - A Love Story

All of the K-129 widows we contacted were willing, even eager to talk about their husbands. During these intereviews we discovered something quite unexpected. A love story between what can only be described as extraordinary. The relationship between Captain Second Rank Alexander M. Zhuravin and his wife Irina.

Alexander Zhuravin was introduced to Irina by her brother, Stanislav Grigorievich, who would later become an admiral in the Soviet Navy.  While a cadet, Stanislav gave Alexander Irina's address, and showed him her picture. He soon wrote to her, and included his photo. The two wrote to each other for two years before they finally met.

At the university, Irina was an artist and folk dancer. Her company toured across the former Soviet Union. Five years later, he placed a ring on her finger. That spring, they were married. Irina had this to say about Alexander:

"For me, it wasn't a surprise. I had known for a long time that he would be mine. Many girls liked him. There were a lot of girls after him, but I knew he wasn't going anywhere. I knew that Alexander was the one for me. More than anything, I liked how he wore a suit. He was very gallant."
